The stages of the Giro d'Italia 2017 in detail
Stage #1: Alghero – Olbia
Date: 05.05.2017
Length: 203km
Type: Flat / Wavy
As previously announced, the 100th anniversary of the Giro d'Italia will start in Alghero, Sardinia. 203 bumpy kilometers lead to Olbia, where a sprinter could possibly celebrate the first stage win again. However, the small climb just before the finale could pose problems for some.
Stage #2: Olbia – Tortolì
Date: 06.05.2017
Length: 208km
Type: Wavy
Already on the second day there is a small foretaste of the difficult route of the Giro d'Italia 2017. Along the coast, two categorized climbs head south to the destination of Tortolì.
Stage #3: Tortolì - Cagliari
Date: 07.05.2017
Length: 148km
Type: Flat
The end of the Sardinian guest performance is a flat stage, which the sprinters will undoubtedly mark in red again - especially since the following days are topographically significantly more difficult.
Stage #4: Cefalù – Etna
Date: 09.05.2017
Length: 180km
Type: mountain stage (mountain arrival)
The first real endurance test for the ranking riders and climbers awaits on the first day on the Italian mainland. A difficult stage awaits in Sicily with the first mountain finish on Mount Etna - spectacular pictures are guaranteed here.
Stage #5: Pedara – Messina
Date: 10.05.2017
Length: 157km
Type: Wavy
After the grueling day before, it's the sprinters' turn again: Messina offers one of the few opportunities this year for the fast men.
Stage #6: Reggio Calabria – Terme Luigiane
Date: 11.05.2017
Length: 207km
Type: Flat / Wavy
A very interesting stage. Above all, the complicated finale with its constant ups and downs offers numerous tactical possibilities for a breakaway group or a strong soloist.
Stage #7: Castrovillari - Alberobello
Date: 12.05.2017
Length: 220km
Type: flat stage
At the end of the first Giro week, a stage that is quite unspectacular on paper awaits in the Apulian municipality of Alberobello.
Stage #8: Molfetta - Peschici
Date: 13.05.2017
Length: 189km
Type: Wavy
Again a rather wavy stage that offers promising terrain for breakaways or in-form puncheurs.
Stage #9: Montenero di Bisaccia - log cabin
Date: 14.05.2017
Length: 139km
Type: mountain stage (mountain arrival)
The first big indicator of the Giro d'Italia 2017: If you catch a bad day when you arrive at the Blockhaus, you should be able to bury all your Giro dreams.
Stage #10: Foligno - Montefalco
Date: 16.05.2017
Length: 39,2km
Type: Individual Time Trial
The first of two time trials at the Giro 2017 - with one or the other climb during the almost 40km, it is more likely to be a case for riders like Tom Dumoulin or Chris Froome and not necessarily accommodating proven specialists such as Rohan Dennis or Tony Martin.
Stage #11: Florence – Bagno di Romagna
Date: 17.05.2017
Length: 161km
Type: mountain stage
Four categorized climbs await the participants in the eleventh stage - none of them are particularly difficult, but problems with form could also pull the tooth out of a favorite here.
Stage #12: Forlì – Reggio Emilia
Date: 18.05.2017
Length: 237km
Type: flat stage
After numerous difficult stages, the sprinters now have another chance – if they haven't already given up.
Stage #13: Reggio Emilia – Tortona
Date: 19.05.2017
Length: 162km
Type: flat stage
And another completely flat stage for the sprinters. Opportunity for the classification drivers to gather some strength, which will also be urgently needed in the last week.
Stage #14: Castellania - Oropa
Date: 20.05.2017
Length: 131km
Type: Wavy (mountain arrival)
The mountain finish in Oropa marks the start of the crucial final third of the 2017 Giro d'Italia. Now it's time for the favorites to come out and assert their claims.
Stage #15: Veldengo – Bergamo
Date: 21.05.2017
Length: 199km
Type: Wavy
A classic 'calm before the storm' stage over almost 200km to Bergamo, before what is probably the most difficult stage in recent Giro history awaits the following day.
Stage #16: Rovetta – Bormio
Date: 23.05.2017
Length: 227km
Type: mountain stage
What a killer stage! As if Mortirolo, Stelvio and Umbrailpass were not enough in one stage, at almost 230 km it is also one of the longest of the Tour of Italy 2017 - this is where the wheat will finally be separated from the chaff.
Stage #17: Tirano – Canazei
Date: 24.05.2017
Length: 219km
Type: mountain stage
Breakaway terrain on the 219km between Tierano and Canazei: Lots of descents and climbs and a complicated final could play into the hands of a strong group.
Stage #18: Moena – Ortisei/St.Ulrich
Date: 25.05.2017
Length: 137km
Type: mountain stage
Another brutal stage in beautiful South Tyrol: Five difficult climbs and a mountain finish in St. Ulrich will ensure decent time intervals and set the course for the Maglia Rosa.
Stage #19: San Candido/Innichen – Piancavallo
Date: 26.05.2017
Length: 191km
Type: mountain stage
No opportunity to relax: After the difficult day before, it counts again today for those who think there are chances in the overall ranking. The difficult final climb up to the top of the mountain in Piancavallo should make your thighs burn.
Stage #20: Pordenone - Asiago
Date: 27.05.2017
Length: 190km
Type: mountain stage
The penultimate stage of the Giro d'Italia 2017 is a little easier than on the previous days, even if the ranking riders can't allow themselves a weak phase here either.
Stage #21: Monza – Milan
Date: 28.05.2017
Length: 28km
Type: Individual Time Trial
The almost 30km final individual time trial from the Formula 1 track in Monza to Milan could still cause a few shifts depending on the overall standings on the last day. Excitement is guaranteed until the end.
