Market: As part of the Ironman Hawaii taking place this weekend in Kona, BMC presented its new triathlon and time trial bike, the BMC Timemachine, on site today. Even if the name and appearance are reminiscent of the previous model, a lot has happened with the specialist. Thanks to years of development work, great progress has been made, especially with the seating position.
BMC Timemachine 2017: adjustability is key
The development of the new BMC Timemachine took four years. During these 48 months, the specific needs of time trialists and triathletes have been extensively studied and analyzed. They worked together with the engineers from Sauber, who in turn brought in the expertise accumulated from Formula 1 development. The end result is the new Timemachine – what it claims to be the fastest bike of all time.
In doing so, a completely new development was deliberately avoided and instead the path taken with the predecessor model was continued, but with the new Timemachine the focus is a little more on the triathlon area, especially the long distance. One result of this development is the new V-Cockpit - especially for triathletes.
Measurements in the wind tunnel revealed that the high stack, which many riders prefer over long distances for reasons of comfort, negatively affects the aerodynamics of the overall system in many respects. To counteract this effect, the V-Cockpit was developed, which brings the arm pads into a significantly higher position, but at the same time reduces air turbulence. In and of itself, there is nothing to be said against using it for long time trials on the road, but depending on the setting, the V-Cockpit could fall outside the UCI regulatory framework. That's why BMC also offers the option of the flat cockpit, which accommodates those drivers who prefer a flat seating position.
The development of the frame and the V-Cockpit in 14 steps
Not only do you get different configuration options for the cockpit, the seat post can also be locked in two positions for different areas of use. In the front position there is a seat angle of up to 80,8° - ideal for triathletes. In the rear, classic position, the angle is significantly flatter and is thus again within the UCI regulations. Thanks to the specially developed saddle clamping head, the saddle can also be moved over a large area on the post, giving you an effective adjustment range of 124 (!) mm. Clever: If you opt for the steep sitting position, the rear area of the frame can be used for the storage box, which is also new, in which aerodynamically neutral utensils such as spare tires or similar can be accommodated.
Also new for 2017 is the Brake Booster Technology: With a larger transmission ratio between the brake lever and the brake itself, not only does the final force increase, but the rim also has significantly more space between the brake shoes: Even with major deformations during racing, the wheel can deflect thus continue to rotate unhindered.
BMC Timemachine 2017: Two frame models
As usual with BMC, the new Timemachine also offers the choice between several or, to be more precise, between two frame models. However, many of the features presented are only compatible with the top model Timemachine 01 (caution: the naming has changed and the TM01 of the predecessor is no longer used). With the Timemachine 02 you have to do without the new V-cockpit as well as the integrated hinge fork and the brake booster. The aero post, which can be mounted in two positions, is also standard on the cheaper model.
