News in brief: In Ghent, Belgium, Fabian Cancellara officially said goodbye to the big cycling stage. More than 6.000 spectators celebrated Spartacus for the last time in the Kuipke Velodrom. One or two companions also did the honors – including Bradley Wiggins and Frank Schleck.
So now the time has really come. After many many years we have to say goodbye to Fabian Cancellara. The charismatic Swiss man did the honors for the last time in Ghent at the weekend and was duly celebrated again at his farewell event 'Ciao Fabian'. The 35-year-old has racked up countless titles throughout his career, including four time-trial gold medals at the World Championships and two Olympic time-trial titles – the last just last August in Rio.
There is a good reason why he did not celebrate his farewell in his native Switzerland, but in Belgium: thanks to his successes in the Belgian classics, he has a huge following, especially in Flanders. The farewell event was completely sold out many weeks in advance.
We will miss him. Hi Fabian!
