Cycling: Another successful season lies behind the Spanish team from Movistar - and the next one should of course follow. The conditions for this are good, but you have to cope with a sensitive bloodletting among the mountaineer fraction.

Movistar Team 2017: team bikes and equipment

In 2017, as one of two WorldTour teams, Movistar will once again be riding with wheels from the Koblenz-based manufacturer Canyon. Nairo Quintana and his colleagues will again be using almost completely new material - the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX was reissued for the past season, the Speedmax CF SLX saw the light of day this year and the aero bike offers little reason for a reissue.

Product news: 21 models! Canyon Ultimate, Aerorad and Endurace now with disc brakes

Published: 15. December 2016

Market: Bang in Koblenz – Canyon expands its range of road bikes with disc brakes to the entire product range. For 2017 there will be 21 disc models, from the aero bike to the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX Disc. At the same time, however, the existing rim brake models will be retained. The topic of disc brakes on racing bikes was probably one of the topics of this year, […]

Things are getting exciting on the brake front: Not only because Canyon has now officially presented versions for disc brakes for all of its models, but also because Movistar outfitter Campagnolo has been tinkering with its first disc brake for some time now.

Movistar Team 2017: Sensitive bloodletting in the mountains

As in the previous three years, Team Movistar won the UCI WorldTour Teams Ranking in 2016. However, they were denied the really big triumph at the Tour de France again this year, because Nairo Quintana had no chance in the duel against Chris Froome and even only ended up in third place. Things went better at the Vuelta a Espana when the little Colombian was able to turn the tables. The whole season can best be described with simple numbers: 36 victories and 65 further podium finishes speak for themselves in a clearly positive way. In addition to Nairo Quintana, Alejandro Valverde was once again responsible for many top results. The now 36-year-old Spaniard is only slacking off very slightly, even at an advanced age in cycling. He set a new record with his fourth victory at the Flèche Wallonne and also competed in all three grand tours. After third place in the Giro d'Italia and sixth place in the Tour de France, it was only twelfth place at the Vuelta a Espana, but overall the season was extremely satisfactory for Valverde and Movistar.

In addition to the two superstars from Movistar, Ion Izagirre also played his part. He made his breakthrough this season with a stage win in the Tour de France and top placings in the overall standings of the Tour de Romandie (3rd), the Tour de Suisse (2nd) and Paris-Nice (5th). The 27-year-old presented himself several times as a good time and climb driver. However, anyone who expected that the Movistar Ion Izagirre team would now build up as Valverde's successor was unfortunately wrong. In 2017 he will start for the new Bahrain-Merida team. Likewise, by the way, like his teammates Javier Moreno and Giovanni Visconti. As a result, the Movistar team lost three strong climbers at once. Sprinter Juan Jose Lobato has also left the team. Only the Italian Daniele Bennati can be described as a well-known newcomer. After all, Carlos Barbero is a very talented man who will join Movistar from the Caja Rural team. Nevertheless, the bloodletting will certainly make itself felt overall, because especially in the mountains you have had to accept a lot of losses. In addition, Valverde is not getting any younger and at some point he will actually have to noticeably decrease his performance. Then especially drivers like Carlos Alberto Betancur, Winner Anacona and the Herrada brothers are in demand to close the gap.
