cycling: The Golden Wheel goes to Peter Sagan

2 December 2016 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: As expected, Peter Sagan has been awarded the Vélo d'Or 2016 by the French cycling magazine Vélo Magazine. The Slovak prevailed against Tour winner Chris Froome and Vuelta winner Nairo Quintana.

The best season of his career

Peter Sagan not only defended his world title this year, but has also won the European Championships, the Tour of Flanders, his fifth green jersey and three stages in the Tour de France. Did we forget something? For sure! Sagan celebrated a total of 15 wins this season. He also ended the UCI WorldTour Ranking in first place. Last year he finished third behind Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Froome in the election for professional cyclist of the season. The prize is awarded by the French cycling magazine Velo Magazine. International sports journalists have been choosing the professional cyclist of the season since 1992. Peter Sagan got 86 points, Chris Froome got 70 and Quintana 43. This was Sagan's first time winning the Golden Wheel. Alberto Contador is the record holder with four awards so far.
