Market: The German manufacturer Conway is continuing its extensive range of children's bikes in 2017. In addition to sporty mini-MTBs, Conway children's bikes are also available with full StVZO equipment. You can also choose between variants with rigid or spring forks.
In 14, Conway has a total of 2017 bikes for kids in its range: starting with balance bikes for the very little ones up to the age of three through to full-grown 26″ bikes for those who are about to make the leap to small adult bikes. But there is not only a wide range of wheel and frame sizes: the three main models with 20, 24 and 26″ are available with or without a suspension fork, either as a minimalist sports bike or a fully equipped city bike with hub dynamo and mudguards.
When it comes to sheer riding fun, Conway openly recommends minimalist children's bikes with rigid forks. Suspension forks for children's bikes not only have significantly less spring travel than their adult counterparts, they are also relatively heavy. Sure, many may now think "One kilo or not..." - but weight plays a decisive role, especially with children's bikes. You only have to consider the weight ratio between bike and rider: For a 10-year-old boy with a body weight of 30kg, the bike can easily make up a third of the system weight (rider + bike). This would be unthinkable for adults and here it becomes clear why a kilogram more or less is simply very important for children's bikes.
But especially if the bike is not only to be used for leisure fun as a mini-MTB, but also, for example, as a means of transport to school, to friends, etc., StvZO-compliant equipment is important. Clip-on lights are probably not a very good alternative for most kids: too often they are simply forgotten, the batteries are empty or they are stolen from the handlebars before school, for example. For this reason, Conway not only installs fixed lighting in the roadworthy MC series, but also feeds the necessary energy from a robust hub dynamo, which on the one hand increases the weight a little, but on the other hand ensures the power supply for the lighting. Here you have to make compromises.
Anyone who actually sees the children's bike as a small piece of sports equipment and an entry-level MTB should consider the model variants with a suspension fork, despite the additional weight. When it comes to the first attempts at walking on the trail, the few millimeters of spring travel take the fear out of the first little roots and also forgive more driving mistakes.
For the really small ones, Conway also has the right entry-level model with the MS12: The wheel weighs less than 4 kg and is even equipped with a rim brake on the rear wheel. Although this is usually not absolutely necessary with balance bikes, it gives the kids the opportunity to get used to it before using the brakes becomes extremely important with the first real bike.
