With the new Comete Ultimate, Mavic is launching a new flagship model when it comes to road cycling shoes. The price of a whopping €1000 almost knocks you out, yes, you read that correctly, a thousand euros. Just as amazing as the price, however, seems to be the power saving, which is supposed to be the result of an extremely stiff sole and better power transmission.
In terms of construction alone, the Comete Ultimate shoes differ from all other cycling shoes, as they use a two-piece design inspired by ski boots. One part is a carbon outer shell that combines low weight and high rigidity. In addition, this outer shoe has been equipped with large ventilation openings and two rotary knobs. The inner shoe, on the other hand, is removable and is actually a bit reminiscent of a classic ski inner shoe.
The aim of the Mavic Comete Ultimate is to achieve drastic energy savings while offering comfort and efficiency. This is achieved through a very close connection to the wheel and a consistent power transmission through a so-called "360 degree pedal rotation" mechanism. By minimizing the sole height to 4,5mm, maximum freedom of movement should be guaranteed. As a result, according to the manufacturer, you get an average saving of 4,2 watts per revolution, as well as 15% energy savings for the large calf muscles.
The Comete Ultimate will be available from April 15th in six sizes from 40 to 47,5, but their availability will be limited. With a cycling shoe for 1000€ you will have to see how big the demand is.
