Testing: Better to stay dry - the SKS S-GUARD in the test

March 3, 2017 by Florian Nowak

Who does not know it ?! When it rains and the roads are wet, it is anything but pleasant to be on the bike. The splashing water in particular makes for wet and dirty pants, which can quickly lead to seating problems. The SKS S-GUARD should now offer a light and practical alternative to the classic mudguard. Velomotion tested it.

At the beginning we were a bit skeptical about what the approx. 30 cm long plastic part is supposed to do at all. Nevertheless, the SKS S-GUARD was fastened under the saddle in no time and seemed to be holding up well. According to the manufacturer, you can also insert a cable tie through the holes to ensure more stability, but this wasn't necessary for us. Due to the various attachment options and the soft material, the SKS S-GUARD can be used on almost any saddle model.

After the first exit on a wet road we were positively surprised. The 24 grams are practically nothing and you don't get stuck or otherwise disturbed when driving. The S-GUARD actually keeps a large part of the splash water and dirt away from the buttocks, which is very pleasant because there is no unpleasant rubbing as is usually the case with wet trousers. A small disadvantage is that the mudguard can slip a little on very bad roads. However, this is not particularly dramatic and can be remedied with a quick flick of the wrist. With a lot of water, however, the SKS S-GUARD reaches its limits, as every now and then some splashes come up and miss the protection. Thanks to its low weight and manageable size, it fits in any jersey pocket and can be taken with you or mounted on your bike when the weather is uncertain. This type of rain protection is also being seen more and more often in competitions, as it is a sensible way to keep yourself (more) dry. At a price of just under 8 €, the costs are quite manageable anyway and offer good value for money.

Conclusion: SKS S-GUARD

Pro

  • Easy construction
  • Fits under (almost) every saddle
  • Low weight
  • Cheap

Contrary to

  • Can slip easily
  • Limited protection in heavy rain

The SKS S-Guard is a great alternative to classic mudguards. The low weight in particular makes it possible to use the protection in competitions or to take it with you in your jersey pocket when the weather is uncertain. The S-Guard can slip a bit on rough ground, but you can use a cable tie to fix it.

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
