Clothing: Test: Bontrager Town Stormshell Jacket

May 23, 2017 by Michael Faiß

Cut: Daily life
Size: Turns out big
hood: No

Price: € 159,99

With the Town Stormshell Jacket, US manufacturer Bontrager is clearly targeting the sporty commuter who is looking for a loyal companion for the daily commute to the office or to university, who not only keeps the unpleasant wet outside in bad weather, but also keeps the very good one at the same time Visibility ensures more safety on the road. With a sporty cut that still leaves enough room for normal everyday clothing, you can always easily slip on the Bontrager jacket as soon as the first drops fall.

Probably the biggest advantage of the Stormshell Jacket is the extremely good visibility: This is not only due to the neon yellow color (the Bontrager jacket is also available in black as an alternative), but also to the numerous small and large reflective elements and last but not least to the im Additional light integrated in the back area, which is powered by a button cell. The light is clearly visible, but is attached quite far down on the jacket – only in combination with a low-hanging messenger bag does the light strip press slightly on the back.

The ventilation concept of the jacket is extremely successful: All pockets (four in total) also serve as ventilation openings thanks to the mesh inside the jacket. The incoming air pulls through the jacket and can escape again through the openings on the back, which works very well in practice. The wearing comfort is okay, the fleece trimmings inside the collar are comfortable and the fit on the bike is okay for almost all body sizes. Unfortunately, the Bontrager jacket looks a bit 'cheap' due to the mesh inside, some somewhat coarser seams and the material that rustles a lot.

The weather protection is good, but the material gives way after a while in constant rain, especially in combination with a backpack, and the water presses through to the inside. Unfortunately, rain penetrates quite quickly through the somewhat wide-cut collar.

The Bontrager Town Stormshell Jacket is the rain jacket of choice for commuters who don't want to leave visibility to chance on the road. With the eye-catching colouring, numerous reflective elements and last but not least the integrated additional light in the back area, you clearly draw attention to yourself. The weather protection is good, but the material and workmanship are rather average.
