Before the start of the anniversary edition, the organizers of the 100th Giro d'Italia are providing a new special classification for topics of conversation and discussions. The special classification is about the Pirelli Premio Miglior Discesista, which is intended to honor the fastest downhill rider. To do this, sections from a total of ten stages (8-20) will be used, including the descent from the 2.758 meter high Stelvio Pass, which is the highest point of the race.
There has already been harsh criticism from the driver organization ANAPRC (Association of North American Professional Road Cyclists), which described such a special classification as "dangerous and irresponsible". “Of course, downhill skiing is a part of racing, but it shouldn't result in a new competition that increases risk-taking for its own sake,” continued ANAPRC Director Michael Carcaise.
According to the Giro road book, the fastest downhill rider at the end of each stage receives prize money of 500 euros and eight points. At the end of the tour, the driver with the most points will receive a prize of 5000 euros, which corresponds to the amount for winning the mountain jersey.
