MTB cycling: After the opening race in Nove Mesto, the XCO Mountain Bike World Cup 2017 made a stop in Albstadt last weekend. The Swiss Nino Schurter continues his successful journey and got his meanwhile 22nd Worldcup victory. In the women's category, the Ukrainian Yana Belomoina caused a surprise with her first place.
The second run of the MTB World Cup 2017 - the second victory for Nino Schurter! With a lead of 26 seconds, the Olympic champion relegated the CX Vice World Champion Mathieu van der Poel to second place in Albstadt. New Zealand's Anton Cooper finished third, 49 seconds down on the winner. Manuel Fumic was unlucky and German hopes were pinned on him after the disappointing result in Nove Mesto. Although the course – according to his own statements – did not suit him, Fumic was in a good sixth place on the last lap before a defect overtook him. In the end, it was unfortunately only enough for ninth place. Mathias Flückiger caught his breath with his departure. After a jump, he overturned and fell down an embankment. Fortunately, the bruises and abrasions remained.
Even with the women, the German successes were largely absent. Sabine Spitz, who finished second in Nove Mesto, was seventh at her home World Cup in Albstadt. Behind her followed Adelheid Morath from Freiburg, who showed a strong race. After the starting lap in 20th place, she rolled up the field from behind to seventh place in the second lap, but then went over the handlebars. After an early crash, Helen Grobert had to retire on the penultimate lap. The surprise came from Yana Belomoina from the Ukraine, who can be happy about her first victory in the Elite World Cup. Polish Maja Wloszczowska crossed the finish line in second, 16 seconds behind. European Champion Jolanda Neff from Switzerland was third.
