Cycling: Marcus Burghardt (BORA-hansgrohe) is German road champion for the first time. After almost 34km on the demanding circuit in Chemnitz, the 214-year-old took the title ahead of his teammate Emanuel Buchmann and John Degenkolb, who won the sprint of the chasing group. Velomotion editor Florian Nowak finished seventh, less than 3 minutes behind.
A new German champion on the road - at the age of 34 and in the autumn of his career, Bavarian Marcus Burghardt can look forward to the gold medal in the national championship for the first time. After eleven laps on the undulating, demanding course in Chemnitz, the BORA-hansgrohe pro was the fastest man. The final decided between him and his teammate Emanuel Buchmann, who already won the title in 2015. For the duo it is a more than successful dress rehearsal for the tour start in a week. Behind them, John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) and Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin) fought for the last remaining podium place. With a deficit of 43 seconds, this finally went to Degenkolb, who will also be at the start of the Grand Départ in Düsseldorf and should be quite satisfied with his performance.
We are particularly happy with our editor Florian Nowak (Herrmann Radteam), who, after his fourth place in the U23 DM, made it into the top 10 again today. With a deficit of 2:36, it was seventh place as the best non-WorldTour driver - congratulations!
