Cycling: Michael Matthews (Sunweb) won stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse. The Australian prevailed in Bern against Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) and the German John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo). This means that Michael Matthews will also be at the start in the yellow jersey tomorrow.
Lasse Norman Hansen extends the lead in the mountain classification
After Rohan Dennis (BMC) won the prologue, his teammate Stefan Küng secured the lead in the overall standings yesterday. There shouldn't be a particularly difficult task awaiting him and his team today. The 3rd stage of the Tour de Suisse led the field over a relatively bumpy 159 kilometers from Menziken to Bern, but at the end of the day there was a mass sprint. Early in the race, two pilots, Lasse Norman Hansen (Aqua Blue Sport) and Elmar Reinders (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), broke away from the peloton. Hansen secured all mountain classifications and was thus able to further extend his lead in the mountain classification. In the fight for the stage win, however, the two played no role. After the BMC team controlled the pace for long stretches, the sprinter teams finally took over. With 25 kilometers to go, Reinders was already falling behind. A short time later, Hansen was caught up again by the approaching pack.
Michael Matthews strikes twice – win & yellow
Stefan Küng was able to quietly and secretly expand his lead in the overall classification. He secured third place in the intermediate sprints and got one second credited to his account. When the field reached the old town of Bern, several sections had to be crossed on cobblestones. Team BMC took command again, even though numerous teams were fighting for positions at the front. The goal was clear: keep the pace as high as possible to give Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) the best chance. The pavé sections and the uphill home stretch naturally suited the Belgian Olympic champion. But Bora-hansgrohe and Sunweb were also at the forefront. An attack by Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r) was thwarted before the expected sprint finally took place. Michael Matthews (Sunweb) opened the battle for the day's win. Nobody could counter the Australian. Matthews won ahead of Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) and John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo). As a result, Michael Matthews also takes the lead in the overall classification. BMC's work didn't pay off today.
