Cycling: Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r) has won the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse. The Italian pulled away on the final climb and was able to keep a narrow lead to the finish. Overall leader Damiano Caruso (BMC) lost 15 seconds to the day's winner and lost the yellow jersey to the same. Both are now in first and second place at the same time. Switzerland's Mathias Frank (Ag2r) is currently fifth, 23 seconds back.
Tom Dumoulin resigns
After Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) yesterday at the fifth stage was able to celebrate his 14th stage win in a Tour de Suisse, a much more demanding section was on the program today. The route took the riders over 166,7 kilometers from Locarno to La Punt. First, at kilometer 66, the San Bernadino had to be crossed before, after a long descent and approach, the final ascent to the Aulbula Pass went up. The stage should end at an altitude of 2.315 meters. Tom Giro winner Dumoulin (Sunweb) and his Austrian teammate Georg Preidler as well as the Colombian climbing specialist Jarlinson Pantano (Trek-Segafredo) no longer wanted to do this to themselves. The ten breakaways who were able to break away after around 45 kilometers on the climb to the San Bernadino still had something to do today: Matvey Mamykin (Katusha-Alpecin), Philip Deignan (Sky), Jan Bakelants (Ag2r), Michael Woods (Cannondale-Drapac) , Carlos Verona (Orica-Scott), Antonio Pedrero (Movistar), Ondrej Cink (Bahrain-Merida), Simone Petilli (UAE) and Tomasz Marczynski and Bart De Clerq (Lotto Soudal).
Damiano Pozzovivo breaks away – and secures a yellow card
Since Jan Bakelants, the best-placed breakaway in the overall standings, was only 2:21 minutes behind leader Damiano Caruso (BMC), Team BMC had to do most of the work. When it came to the ascent to the Albula Pass, the breakaways were only about a minute ahead. There Michael Woods was able to break away from his companions. Meanwhile, there were some attacks in the main draw. The group shrank to the favorites and Damiano Caruso was isolated. However, the Italian was able to personally parry one attack after the other. When the steepest part of the mountain had to be completed, Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r) was able to break away from the group of favorites. The little Italian caught up with Michael Woods. Together, the two defended themselves against the group of favorites on the last downhill and flat kilometers. Jon Izagirre (Bahrain-Merida) attacked there. The strong downhiller was able to break away with Rui Costa (UAE) and the Swiss Mathias Frank (Ag2r). Meanwhile, Woods lost contact with Pozzovivo. The Italian couldn't take the stage win anymore. Second was Rui Costa ahead of Jon Izagirre. Damiano Caruso lost 15 seconds to the day's winner. Pozzovivo takes the lead in the overall standings at the same time as Caruso.
