cycling: Exchange exchange: Mikel Landa goes from Froome to Quintana

August 15, 2017 by Michael Behringer

Cycling Spain Landa

Cycling: As expected, Mikel Landa will leave Team Sky at the end of the season. The Spaniard is drawn to the Movistar team. Spicy: There he will probably form a double leadership together with Nairo Quintana. These two are likely to become Chris Froome's biggest challengers - and Mikel Landa is currently still driving for him.

Eusebio Unzue: “He's still a young driver. With everything he has shown he should be the one to lead Spanish cycling in the years to come.”

Will Mikel Landa only remain the helper role again?

The Vuelta a España starts in Nimes on Saturday. The Spaniard Mikel Landa will not be there at the start. The strong ranking rider already has the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France under his feet. So he was not intended for the Tour of Spain by his team leaders anyway. But now - just a few days before the start of the Vuelta - Mikel Landa has still made headlines. He has decided not to extend his contract with Team Sky, which is due to expire at the end of the season. He will leave the team around tour winner Chris Froome. Mikel Landa is joining Team Movistar next season. The two top classification drivers Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana are currently driving there. Will Landa queue up back there? Probably not. After appearing to be stronger than Chris Froome at times in the Tour de France, he will now want to ride on his own account. This change is definitely a big win for the excitement of the Grand Tours - and a bitter loss for Sky and Froome.

Mikel Landa
Landa won a stage at the Giro d'Italia. At the Tour de France he was at times stronger than captain Chris Froome.
