cycling: BinckBank Tour stage #2: Stefan Küng takes the lead in the time trial

August 8, 2017 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Stefan Küng (BMC) has once again proven his qualities in time trials. The Swiss just secured victory on the second stage of the BinckBank Tour. He also takes over the leadership jersey from Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe). On the other hand, the two German time trial specialists Tony Martin and Nils Politt from the Katusha-Alpecin team were unlucky. They fell on the rain-soaked road and were therefore unable to compete for the front seats.

Stefan Küng starts early - Peter Sagan remains in wait

In the nine-kilometer time trial around Voorburg, Stefan Küng prevailed. Since the start was in reverse order of the overall standings, many specialists started very early. Stefan Küng set his best time of 10:58 and was the only professional to remain under eleven minutes until the end of the time trial. He left quite a few well-known drivers behind him. Second, four seconds behind, was Pole Maciej Bodnar (Bora-hansgrohe), who won the time trial at the Tour de France. The top three is completed by Dutch Giro winner Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), five seconds behind. The Austrian Matthias Brändle (Trek-Segafredo) finished seventh. Yesterday's stage winner Peter Sagan also presented himself well. The World Champion lost 25 seconds to today's winner and remains in wait. Tony Martin lost about 40 seconds. The time-trial world champion fell on a wet track and is now a little behind in the overall standings.
