cycling: BinckBank Tour stage #5: Lars Boom celebrates the day's win and overall lead

August 11, 2017 by Michael Behringer

Lars Boom

Cycling: Lars Boom (LottoNL-Jumbo) has won the fifth stage of the BinckBank Tour. In an exciting race shortly before the end, the Dutchman was able to break away from the very decimated peloton and win the day. In addition, he saved a few seconds across the finish line, so that he can now put on the leader's jersey.

Everyone against Peter Sagan – Stefan Küng can't keep up

Today all eyes were on Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe). As expected, the stage profile should suit the world champion very well. 21 slipways and three cobblestone passages prevented a classic mass sprint. Rather, today's profile could be called the Mini Amstel Gold Race. The stage lived up to its name because the race was consistently exciting. However, it was to be too hard for Stefan Küng. The Swiss lost the connection relatively early and thus also all ambitions for the overall ranking. Several breakaway groups were formed before the decisive attack was made just a few meters from the finish. Lars Boom broke away from his teammates and saved three seconds over the line. Second was Peter Sagan ahead of Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Oliver Naesen (Ag2r) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo). However, this was not a preliminary decision in the overall standings, because Peter Sagan is only two seconds behind Lars Boom.
