Product news: Eurobike 2017: Rocky Mountain Instinct 2018 and new Pipeline Plusbike

September 6, 2017 by Michael Faiss

Market / Eurobike 2017: There were some new bikes to admire at the Rocky Mountain stand at Eurobike 2017. These include the two sister models Rocky Mountain Instinct 2018 and Pipeline 2018, which will share the frame from now on, and of course the E-MTB Altitude Powerplay, which was presented on a smaller scale some time ago.

Rocky Mountain Instinct 2018

In Canada at Rocky Mountain, work continues on a complete overhaul of the MTB portfolio. After launching the two long-travel models Altitude (to the test) and Slayer reissued and with the Altitude power play presented the first E-MTB in the company's history, it's now the turn of the two trail bikes Instinct and Pipeline. Both bikes will share a frame from the 2018 model year. However, while the Instinct stands on large 29″ wheels, the Pipeline rolls over the trail as usual on the wide B+ tires.

Rocky Mountain Instinct 2018: Full-fledged trail bike with 140mm travel

Until now, the Instinct was more in the border area between marathon, tour and trail, but now the guys from British Columbia leave no doubt: The Rocky Mountain Instinct 2018 is a real trail bike. With 140mm of travel at the front and rear, it has more travel than its predecessor and the geometry has also been tweaked a lot. The two models with aluminum frames are joined by four carbon Instincts, of which the top model in the BC Edition (=British Columbia Edition) is a bit different. The latter has been given a different linkage lever, which tickles a whopping 155mm of spring travel out of the rear and is paired with a 160 mm fork at the front. Here you come dangerously close to the in-house Enduro Altitude.

Otherwise you get the features you know and appreciate from Rocky with the Instinct. In addition to the high-quality workmanship and unusual frame designs from shrill and colorful to subtle, this is of course also the self-developed geometry adjustment called Ride9. A flip chip on the shock mount allows the angle of the bike to be adjusted in a total of nine different settings - so you can adapt the Instinct even better to your own requirements.

Rocky Mountain Pipeline 2018: plus tires and more modern geometry

Much of what has been written so far also applies to the new pipeline. The frame is identical to that of the Instinct, only the wheel size is different: Instead of the 29″ tires, 27,5+ tires ensure grip and comfort. Since the smaller wheels are a bit smaller overall despite the thick tires, the geometry of the Pipeline changes slightly compared to the Instinct - to counteract this, the Pipeline has a slightly higher lower bearing shell, which can also be easily retrofitted. Conversely, this also means that both bikes can be ridden with both wheel sizes without any problems. With a second wheelset you cover a really wide range.

Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay: No geometry changes caused by the motor

We were already allowed to do the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay at the official press launch in the French Alps put to the test in detail. The first E-MTB in the long history of Rocky Mountain was also given a large share of the limelight at Eurobike. In particular, the self-developed motor with pulley magically attracted curious looks. The highlight of the Rocky E-MTB: The geometry is completely identical to that of the non-motorized Altitude - there is no other bike on the market in this form to date.
