Track cycling: that's what you call a crowning glory! On the last day of the European Track Cycling Championships 2017 in Berlin, the Germans once again brought in a lot of precious metal. Kristina Vogel in the sprint and Maximilian Levy in the keirin were celebrated with the gold medal in the hall. This is how an exciting and for the BDR extremely successful track cycling European Championship comes to an end. 12 medals, 5 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze - that's something to be proud of!
Nothing for the Germans in Madison
The Velodrom in Berlin was opened to spectators at 9:30 a.m. today. On the last day of the European Track Cycling Championships there were still a few heats and decisions to be made. In the Madison Unfortunately, the Germans went away empty-handed for the ladies. Romy Kasper played no role in awarding the medals after her fall with Lisa Kullmer. The decision was only made in the last sprint. Great Britain became European champions ahead of Ireland and the Netherlands. There was nothing to be gained from the men either. France won ahead of Denmark and Poland. Switzerland finished fourth, Austria eighth and Germany with Theo Reinhardt and Kersten Thiele nineth.

Levy & Vogel provide the icing on the cake
After the slightly disappointing start to the last day of the European Track Cycling Championships 2017 in Berlin, the two final competitions should once again put the spectators in ecstasy. In the kairin in the men's competition, Maximilian Levy secured the gold medal. The German won ahead of the Russian Shane Alan Perkins and the Ukrainian Andrii Vynoukurov. This means that the 30-year-old can once again call himself European champion in this discipline after 2013.
Maximilian Levy: "I'm speechless. It's indescribable. It takes me a moment to realize that.”
Kristina Vogel then once again provided the crowning glory. In the Sprint she gave the French Mathilde Gros no chance. She secured the gold medal without losing a run. Unfortunately, Pauline Sophie Grabosch just missed bronze in the race for third place. The Russian Daria Shmeleva forestalled her. All in all, from the point of view of the BDR, this European track cycling championship must be described as a complete success. From the self-formulated goal "to get four to seven medals", in the end a yield of twelve precious metals has jumped out.
Sports director Patrick Moster: “We wanted to know where we stand. This assessment of the situation turned out better than we had expected. In the Olympic disciplines we are exactly in the corridor that we have agreed.”
Unbelievable! @KristinaVogel strikes again, gold in the individual sprint! @gros_mathilde (FRA) wins silver, bronze to Daria Shmeleva (RUS) pic.twitter.com/hqRnlRNrYE
