cycling: Is there a budget limit for WorldTour teams coming soon?

26 November 2017 by Florian Nowak

Cycling: The recently newly elected UCI President David Lappartient is not holding back on proposals to modernize cycling. The French's latest idea is a salary budget cap for WorldTour teams to ensure more equal opportunities.

In an interview with the French news agency AFP, the new UCI President David Lappartient spoke out in favor of a salary budget cap for WorldTour teams. It should not be about an upper limit for the salaries of the drivers themselves, but about regulating the overall budget of the WorldTour teams. With this, Lappartient wants to ensure more equal opportunities within the first league of cycling, since you can pay the riders as much as you want, but you would have less money for the rest of the team affairs. This is to balance the dominance of the more financially strong teams.

According to the UCI, the total budget of the WorldTour teams currently averages around 18 million euros. However, Team Sky is said to already have a budget of more than 34 million euros. However, the sums are not only derived from the salaries but from all costs.

More than Florian Nowak

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
