Cyclocross: Mathieu van der Poel (Beobank-Corendon) continues to dominate the cyclocross season so far. At the legendary Koppenbergcross in Oudenaarde, he already got his 12th win of the season and sent the European champion away Toon Aerts (Telenet-Fidea) and Lars van der Haar (also Telenet-Fidea) on their places. World Champion Wout van Aert (Crelan-Charles) was 4th.
The Koppenbergcross has been an integral part of the cross calendar since 1988 and is held in Oudenaarde on the famous Koppenberg from the Tour of Flanders. At this year's edition, as so often, Van der Poel attacked early in the race but had problems with his pedals and was caught by Aerts, Van der Haar and World Champion Wout Van Aert. Only in the last half lap was Mathieu van der Poel able to advance decisively and shake off his companions Aert and van der Haar. The classic ascent to the Koppenberg with rough cobblestones was no longer an obstacle for the Dutchman and he drove towards his 12th win of the season. The efforts of the drivers could clearly be seen, winner van der Poel fell to the ground after the finish line and had to struggle with breathing problems.
