Cycling: The young Australian rider Jason Lowndes is dead. According to his team Israel Cycling Academy and the Australian Cycling Federations died the 23-year-old on Friday afternoon during a training session near his hometown of Bendigo in the Australian state of Victoria. Lowndes, who was due to switch to the British team JLT-Condor for the coming season, collided with a car during practice.
Jason Lowndes began his pro career in 2016 with Procontinental Team Drapac. That year, he sprinted to third in the final stage of the Tour de San Luis before finishing sixth in the U23 World Championships in Qatar later that year. Lowndes then signed with the Israel Cycling Academy, for which he finished third and second in stages 1 and 3 of the Tour of Austria that year. In 2018 he was supposed to start for the British Continental team JLT Condor.

We are deeply grieved by the tragic death of our dear friend, rider, and teammate, JASON LOWNDES. JASON, who just celebrated his 23rd birthday 8 days ago, was hit by a car while training today on his bike near his home town in Bendigo, Victoria. Jason raced for Israel Cycling Academy during the 2017 season and his constant broad smile, ever cheerful personality, and warm heart will be terribly missed forever by all of us. We wish to send our deep condolences to Jason's family and friends all over the world. Good bye, wonderful mate.
