cycling: 5 to watch: Phil Bauhaus, the next top German sprinter?

8 January 2018 by Michael Behringer

5 to watch Bauhaus

Cycling: Phil Bauhaus is the first in our new section 5 to watch. The German sprinter from Team Sunweb is good for top results in the coming years. We want to follow the 23-year-old as he develops in 2018. Already at the Tour Down Under we will see the likeable fast man from Bocholt in action.

Bauhaus faces huge footsteps

There is certainly no shortage of strong sprinters in Germany. With Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors) and André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) two of the fastest men drive under the German flag. A John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) and a Nikias Arndt (Sunweb) are also likely to win in a strong field of riders. Another upcoming sprint star also drives for the German team Sunweb: Phil Bauhaus will be 8 years old on July 24th. On this day stands the 2nd stage of the Tour de France 2018 from Mouilleron-Saint Germain to La Roche-sur-Yon on the program – one for Phil Bauhaus. It is not yet clear whether the young sprinter will start in the Tour of France. Last year he competed in the Giro d'Italia and helped Tom Dumoulin to overall victory. It was his first Grand Tour.

"Everything has to be right"

Bauhaus itself looks to the future with confidence. In the Sunweb team presentation he said in front of the assembled press landscape: “It was a good decision to join Sunweb and a great season. I hope to continue like this and get even stronger in the sprints.” He also relies on a well-functioning move: "It's always important. Everything just has to be right. We all worked really well together last season.”

Tough competition in Team Sunweb

After a stage win at the Tour of Denmark in 2016, he made his debut in a WorldTour race in 2017. At the Critérium du Dauphiné he left on the 5st stage among others Arnaud Démare (FDJ), Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie), Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and Alexander Kristoff (Katusha-Alpecin) behind. He finished in the top 5 twice at the Giro d'Italia. So if the German is allowed to drive on his own account, he can certainly do a lot. But he will often have to work for his captains this season as well. In flat terrain, these include the Australian Michael Matthews and the German Nikias Arndt. Together with Max Walscheid, Phil Bauhaus can grow up in their shadow and advance his development at the highest level - and Velomotion will be there.

Bauhaus is the sprint captain at the Tour Down Under

Phil Bauhaus could set a first exclamation mark right at the beginning of the season. His first race will be the Tour Down Under from January 16th to 21st. In Australia they will drive for him in the sprints. Chad Haga, Chris Hamilton, Sam Oomen, Michael Storer, Mike Teunissen and Nikias Arndt, who will be driving for Bauhaus and commented on this at the Sunweb team presentation, will be at his side: "I'm there as a starter for Phil and I hope that I can make just as good a duo with him as I did with Michael last season." At the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, however, Arndt will be the captain and try to get his win from last year to repeat. So there is already a lot going on with the young German sprinters at the beginning of the season. We can be curious to see what new level Phil Bauhaus will take himself to in the coming months.
