21 January 2018 by Michael Behringer

Van der Poel Nommay

Radcross: Mathieu Van der Poel (Beobank-Corendon) won the World Cup in Nommay. The Dutchman was able to break away from his main rival Wout Van Aert (Crelan-Charles) after half the race in France. The American Katherine Compton (Trek) dominated the women's race.

Women: Americans dominate in Nommay

The penultimate World Cup race was held today in Nommay, France. In the women's race, of course, she was the favorite once again Sanne Cant (IKO Beobank), who already has the overall World Cup victory in her pocket. However, the world champion from Belgium didn't have it easy that day. The very soft and muddy ground was her undoing early on in the race. She had to switch equipment and go a long way back before she finished XNUMXth.

Meanwhile, the Americans dominated the race at the front. The newly crowned national champion Catherine Compton (Trek) managed to break away from the competition early on. your countrywoman Kailin Keough (Cylance Pro Cycling) made the double victory possible almost a minute behind. The Frenchwoman Pauline Ferrand Prevot meanwhile made her local compatriots cheer by starting from far behind but still finishing in a strong third. Yolanda Neff (Kross Racing Team) from Switzerland finished eighth, the German Elizabeth Brandau (EBE Racing Team) finished 13th.

Catherine Compton:
"It was a lonely race. But sometimes it's good to have a head start at the beginning. I felt good, like the mud and the tire pressure was good.”

Men: Mathieu Van der Poel clearly ahead despite a mistake

In the men's race in Nommay - not surprisingly - there was another duel between the two outstanding cyclists in cyclocross. At first it looked like it would Mathieu van der Poel (Beobank-Corendon) fell behind. He made a big mistake when changing a wheel, so he had to pull back and lost a lot of positions. With his aggressive driving style, however, he was able to quickly close the gap that had arisen. When he was about halfway through the race, he broke away Wout van aert (Crelan-Charles) and went completely unchallenged towards his solo victory with a lead of 33 seconds. With that he secured the overall victory just before the last World Cup race. countryman Lars van der Haar had to give up the race. The third place Toon Aerts finished a whopping 2:09 minutes after the winner.

Offspring: Strong Swiss

As usual, the juniors and the U23 class started ahead of the elite women and men. Dutchman Mees Hendrikx had a narrow lead over the Belgian in the final sprint of the youngest Ryan Cortjens front. Scarce is also the keyword for the Swiss Loris Rouiller, who missed the podium by just two seconds in fourth place. The German young hopes Tom Lindner and David Westhoff did not finish the race.

The Swiss were also strong in the U23 class. Johan Jacobs, Timon Ruegg and Kevin Kuhn finished fifth, ninth and eleventh - so three Swiss in the top 10. But a Belgian was victorious: Thijs Aerts won ahead of the two French Yan grass and Joshua Dubau. But at the end of the day, not only one cheered.
