Product news: Ortlieb High Visibility bags: Visibility = security

22 January 2018 by Michael Faiss

Product news: The Ortlieb High Visibility bags combine the usual high quality with high suitability for everyday use and thanks to the reflective material they provide an additional safety plus that cyclists can use better than ever today.

As a cyclist, you are a full-fledged road user on deserted country roads or in the crowded city center. Nevertheless, you often feel a bit like fair game: helmet or helmet, you simply have little to counter the several hundred kilogram heavy cars and you are almost constantly in a dangerous situation. There's no question that it shouldn't be, and the causes can be discussed for hours; bad traffic planning, inattentive road users or sometimes just plain bad luck.

Ortlieb High Visibility

As a cyclist there is very little you can do for your own safety in many situations. However, where it is possible, appropriate measures should be taken. This undoubtedly includes visibility in road traffic, especially during the dark season. The StVZO therefore prescribes a corresponding lighting system. Reflectors are also mandatory: in front and behind, on or in the spokes and on the pedals.

Especially during winter and when visibility is difficult, a lighting system according to StVZO is not sufficient in many situations to be recognized quickly enough by other road users, even from a distance. This is where Ortlieb's High Visibility products come into play: smaller and larger bicycle bags, which, thanks to their reflective properties, improve visibility not only in the dark - and at the same time are very good bags in proven Ortlieb quality.

Proven Ortlieb quality means in particular: Robust and waterproof. A special Cordura fabric is used for all bags in the Ortlieb High Visibility line. To put it bluntly, it is a multi-woven, special plastic that is extremely resistant and, thanks to the PU coating, also completely waterproof. In line with Ortlieb principles, all bags are made in Germany and are of course free of PVC.

All bags in the High Visibility line are available in black, which at first glance appears subtle and inconspicuous. However, the upper material has a reflective thread running through it over its entire surface, which makes the bag shine brightly when the light hits it (eg car headlights). This should also eliminate a major point of criticism for many "non-reflective" people, because not everyone is a fan of bright neon colors on their bikes.

But neon fans will also find what they are looking for in the Ortlieb High Visibility bags: the Back-Roller, Sport-Roller, Ultimate6 and Velocity models are also available in bright yellow, which is also very visible in normal daylight and thus additionally improves safety.

A brief introduction to the Ortlieb High Visibility bags

Ortlieb's High Visibility line currently includes seven bags: including six classic bicycle bags for pannier racks, frames and saddles and the well-known and popular Velocity backpack. The pannier bags can be attached partly with the QL 2.1 system, partly with the QL 3.1.

Ortlieb Back Roller High Visibility

In numbers:
mounting: Highway 2.1
Volume: 20L
Weight 840g
Colours): Neon Yellow, Black

Price: € 104,99

The Back-Roller is a fairly large pannier for the rear luggage rack and can be mounted on the left, right or both sides. Thanks to the shoulder strap, the bag is also quite flexible and can also be used as a shoulder bag without any problems - the optionally available carrying system from Ortlieb, with which you can convert the Back-Roller into a backpack, provides even more versatility.

Ortlieb Sport Scooter High Visibility

In numbers:
mounting: Highway 2.1
Volume: 25L / pair
Weight 1440g/pair
Colours): Neon Yellow, Black

Price: €179,99 / pair

The Sport-Roller is the front-wheel counterpart of the Back-Roller. Additional abrasion protection on the back protects the bag and its contents from being damaged by the front wheel's quick release. Like the Back-Roller, it is attached using QL2.1. The Sport-Roller is only available as a pair bag.

Ortlieb Ultimate6 High Visibility

In numbers:
mounting: Universal
Volume: 7L
Weight 740g
Colours): Neon Yellow, Black

Price: € 109,99

The Ultimate6 is a compact handlebar bag with a lockable lid with a magnet. With the help of the integrated shoulder strap, the bag and its contents can also be easily transported next to the bike.

Ortlieb Office Bag High Visibility

In numbers:
mounting: QL2.1 / QL3.1
Volume: 21L
Weight 1620g (QL2.1) / 1540g (QL3.1)
Colours): Neon Yellow, Black

Price: €159,99 (QL2.1) / €179,99 (QL3.1)

The office bag, which is only available in a subtle black, cuts a fine figure as a robust companion on the bike as well as in busy everyday office life. With a volume of 21 liters, it is large and, in addition to a laptop, there is also room for documents and even files without any problems. Two separate inside pockets keep things tidy. The office bag is available with both QL2.1 and QL3.1.

Ortlieb Saddle Bag High Visibility

In numbers:
mounting: Saddle
Volume: 2,7L
Weight 330g
Colours): Black

Price: € 69,99

Opinions are divided when it comes to saddlebags: Admittedly, they are usually not particularly beautiful, but they are extremely practical. The latter applies to the Ortlieb Saddle-Bag in two ways: Thanks to its flat, pulled-back shape and its waterproof properties, it also makes a pretty good emergency mudguard. Inside there is enough space for a hose, a multi-tool and a bar or two.

Ortlieb Velocity High Visibility

In numbers:
mounting: backpack
Volume: 24L
Weight 950g
Colours): Neon Yellow, Black

Price: € 139,99

Not everyone can or wants to attach their bags and their belongings to the bike themselves. With the Velocity, however, Ortlieb also has a backpack in its range in its High Visibility line, which at 24L is a good size for most areas of application. Of course, this comes with padded straps, chest and hip belt and also with an inner pocket that can be buttoned up.
