cycling: Vuelta a San Juan #1: Gaviria as usual with a win in the opening round

22 January 2018 by Michael Behringer

Tour de France preview Gaviria stage 7

Cycling: Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) has won the first stage of the 2018 Vuelta a San Juan Internacional. In the mass sprint he was able to prevail over Niccolo Bonifazio (Bahrain-Merida) and Matteo Pelucchi (Bora-hansgrohe). The Colombian is also the first to wear the leader's jersey.

Gaviria absolutely sovereign

It's nothing new for anymore Fernando Gaviria. The Colombian won his first race of the season for the fourth time in a row. He seems to feel particularly comfortable here in Argentina. No wonder, because his star rose three years ago at the Tour de San Luis. Fernando Gaviria twice beat the great Mark Cavendish in the sprint - now Gaviria is a great himself. On the 148,9-kilometer stage from San Juan to Pocito, his strong squad controlled the pace and didn't let the breakaways go too far. In the mass sprint, starters prepared Maximilian Richeze in his home country, the sprint is exemplary for his captain. All Gaviria had to do was pull out and drive past. It's entirely possible that this won't be Gaviria's only win at the Vuelta a San Juan in 2018. He also has a realistic chance of winning tomorrow on the slightly bumpy stage.

Vuelta a San Juan without Nibali - Majka now favourite

The tour ends back in San Juan on Sunday. The king's stage will be held on January 26th between San Martín and the Alto Colorado. Here the climbers will present themselves and fight for the overall victory. Above all, they should have good chances Rafal Mayka (Bora-hansgrohe), Jarlinson Swamp (Trek Segafredo), Darwin Atapuma (UAE Team Emirates) and the Movistar trio Winner Anacona, Richard Carapaz and Dayer Quintana. Unfortunately can not fight for victory Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida). The Italian did not compete in today's stage due to a gastrointestinal infection. In addition to seven WorldTour teams, six national teams, nine continental teams and five professional teams are also taking part in the Vuelta a San Juan. The king's stage and the individual time trial on the third day will bring about the decision in the overall standings.
