cycling: Tom Boonen becomes a consultant in the Lotto Soudal team

23. February 2018 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: For years Tom Boonen rode for the Belgian team Quick-Step Floors. Now he works for the competition. As a consultant, he will support the professionals of the Lotto Soudal team in the future.

Boonen is back

Less than a year ago Tom Boonen retired. His last appearances shouldn't have a happy ending. Nevertheless, he was jubilantly adopted by his fans at the time. Now he's back - albeit in a different role. Although he will not be involved in the races as a sports director, he will be available to the professionals from Team Lotto Soudal as a consultant in the future. This may seem odd at first given he's been riding for the competition, Quick-Step Floors, for years. On closer inspection, however, this decision is not surprising.

Lott Soudal is a logical choice

Even though Tom Boonen worked for Quick-Step Floors for years, he always had a close connection to the rival team Lotto Soudal. Finally, the team's manager, Paul De Geyter, was his advisor for several years. Boonen's father also works for the bike manufacturer and Lotto Soudal outfitter Ridley.

“I know many of the drivers and supervisors, so there will hardly be any adjustment difficulties. I think I can do more for Belgian cycling with Lotto Soudal than with Quick-Step Floors because Quick-Step is already a world-class team. I would like to take Lotto Soudal there as well.”
