Cycling: Sometimes cycling takes a back seat. Even though today's stage five from Tirreno-Adriatico was of course about victories and times, everyone's thoughts were with the late Michele Scarponi. The stage ended in his native Filottrano. There, Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished seven seconds ahead of world champion Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe).

In memory of Michele Scarponi

At Tirreno-Adriatico it was all about the late Michele Scarponi today. The Italian was hit by a car on April 22 last year during a training session in his home town of Filottrano and died. The route planner from Tirreno-Adriatico therefore ended today's fifth stage in Scarponi's home country. The route from Castelraimondo to Filottrano had to cover 178 kilometers, with the last few kilometers going through the town of Scarponis several times. The wavy profile should prevent a mass sprint and clearly accommodate the puncheurs. It would have been something for Michele Scarponi.

Adam Yates makes for a good family day after all

After the five-strong breakaway group around the Swiss Steve Morabito (Groupama-FDJ) was formed, the field of favorites went together into the final ramp. Due to a breakdown, only one of the favorites should be missing with Chris Froome (Sky). At the same time, the Movistar team slammed into the ramp. Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Geraint Thomas (Sky) and Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) launched an attack first. While Yates was able to break away, the other two were caught by the peloton again. Mikel Landa (Movistar) didn't get away either, as the Bora-hansgrohe team kept up the pace for World Champion Peter Sagan. But they shouldn't be able to approach Adam Yates anymore. While his brother Simon Paris-Nice suffered a bitter defeat today, Adam Yates can celebrate a great victory today. Peter Sagan was second.
