E-mountain bikes: Test: BH Atom-X Lynx 6 27'5 Plus Pro – full integration par excellence

12 April 2018 by Thomas Rieger

Test: We've been eagerly awaiting the newly developed BH Atom-X Lynx 6 from the Basque company BH Bikes since the Eurobike. At the end of March the time had finally come and I was invited to the Spanish region of Andalusia to take the new flagship BH Atom-X Lynx 6 27`5 Plus Pro under the cleats in Malaga.

BH Atom-X Lynx 6 27'5 Plus Pro: The bike

The BH engineers have invested more than 3 years in the development of the Atom-X frame and have created a very unique line. The shape of the frame is already one of the highlights, which enables the battery to be integrated, which has so far been sought in vain. The Atom-X frame design serves as the basis for the Atom-X Lynx full suspension models as well as for the Atom-X hardtails. The motor technology is based on the new Brose Drive S, which, together with the in-house 720 watt-hour battery, is supposed to provide plenty of power and range. A total of four different models are available, from €3.999,90 to the two top models for €5.499,90 each.

In the two top models, the Atom-X Lynx 5 with the built-in components is aimed at all-mountain use, while the Lynx 6, which we present to you here, loves to let off steam on the enduro trails. The rear end uses the Split Pivot System patented by Dave Weagle, which is dampened by the FOX Float DPS Performance. At the front, nothing is left to chance with the FOX 36 Float Performance. Depending on personal taste, which is very different in terms of the shape and size of displays, this is definitely another highlight for one or the other.

The in-house, transflective 2,2-inch "head-up" color display is made of solid aluminum and forms a unit with the stem. The position allows a good view of the LCD screen in almost any driving position. Controlled by a Linux OS Cortex A7 processor with integrated sensors, such an on-board computer still offers a lot of potential for future e-connectivity.

BH Atom-X Lynx 6 27'5 Plus Pro: The Geometry

The Atom-X Lynx 6 is available in sizes medium and large. With a steering angle of 67°, BH takes the classic middle ground here. The chainstay length is 465mm. The seat tube angle of 70° together with the lowerable Kind Shock seat post guaranteed enough traction on the front wheel even on steep climbs.

The technical facts would thus be clarified. What really catches the eye is the frame shape. The closed down tube, which is set back from the hydroformed top tube, allows the battery to sink into it. Thus, the battery is completely decoupled from the frame, which should make it particularly stiff. The battery can be unlocked and pulled out using a key or smart key wristband, just like in the gym.

BH Atom-X Lynx 6 27'5 Plus Pro: The drive

The new Brose Drive S motor with 90Nm serves as a powerful partner together with the in-house 720 watt hour battery. Despite the power of the engine, the sensitive sensors offer a very natural driving experience. As soon as the pedal assistance stops working at 25 km/h, the gearbox and motor are completely decoupled via a freewheel. As a result, the bike can be moved like a classic bicycle even without support, without having to overcome any resistance from the drive.

In order to protect the heart of the Atom-X Lynx, the engine has been given a 3mm thick bashguard, which counteracts unwanted bottoming out. In order to prevent the engine from overheating in the first place, an aluminum plate, the so-called heat dissipation plate, was attached to the engine, which dissipates the heat.

BH Atom-X Lynx 6 27'5 Plus Pro: The controls

You also put your hand to the controls and created a display with a control element that you have never seen before. The control unit, with which you can intuitively zap through the menu, has a vibration function that makes the handle tremble every time you press a button. A nice and well thought-out detail, especially while driving, to get feedback even without eye contact with the display.

You can switch between four support modes, the intensity of which can be individually adjusted using the app or the display. A pushing aid is of course also available. With 256 MB of RAM, you basically have a small computer on board with this display and the options that are offered are correspondingly large. The Bluetooth and Micro-USB interfaces guarantee easy connection to the smartphone. If you want more information in addition to the standard functions, you can use the Ebikemotion app free of charge for the first year. Fitness data, weather information or even navigation via the display can be called up here.

BH Atom-X Lynx 6 27'5 Plus Pro: test ride

In the beautiful area around the historic town of Mijas, 30 kilometers southwest of Malaga, we put the Atom-X Lynx 6 through its paces on a 43km and 1450m long tour. Already after the first meters I felt absolutely comfortable on the bike. The geometry is contemporary and even the first tricky climbs made the anticipation of the tour rise.

The Brose Drive S conveys a very natural driving experience and was particularly impressive when starting off on steep terrain thanks to its sensitivity. The operation together with the clear and intuitive display harmonize perfectly and leave no questions unanswered. After the 1450hm had been mastered with decent remaining battery power, the suspension test was imminent. On some challenging and stony trails we went down to Mijas, where Andalusian cuisine was already waiting for us. The Atom-X Lynx 6 also mastered this task excellently and conveyed both driving pleasure and safety.

The Atom-X Lynx 6 left nothing to be desired. You always feel comfortable on the bike, both on steep climbs and on rough downhill passages. The long development period has paid off and BH boasts exciting concepts and well thought-out details. The technical equipment does not need to hide and does its job without any problems. Only the seat post and the tires don't quite match my personal taste and would probably have to give way to me. For heavier drivers, the built-in SLX brakes could reach their limits. In my opinion, the price for the Atom-X Lynx 6 is justified.
