Product news: Ikea recalls Sladda Fahrrad: This is how buyers get their money back

24 May 2018 by Michael Faiss

Market: Almost two years ago, furniture giant Ikea caused a stir with the presentation of its first bicycle. The Sladda came for an attractive price with quite good equipment, especially the belt drive was unusual for this price range. It is precisely this that is now causing problems and is forcing Ikea to recall all Sladda bicycles. The process for owners is uncomplicated.

In a sober message on the company's own website, Ikea states that all Sladda bicycles sold are being recalled with immediate effect and that further use is advised against. An important supplier had informed them that the drive belt could possibly tear, resulting in an acute risk of falling. Ikea itself is aware of eleven such cases, two of which also resulted in minor injuries.

IKEA was notified by a well-known accessory supplier and asked to recall the SLADDA bicycle due to safety issues with the drive belt. The drive belt can suddenly break, potentially resulting in falls. As a precautionary measure, IKEA is recalling all SLADDA bicycles (26" and 28") and urging customers to stop using the bicycles. IKEA has received eleven reports of such incidents, two of which resulted in minor injuries.

Ikea Sladda recall
Two years ago, the Sladda was introduced with a lot of fanfare - in May 2018 the Swedish manufacturer is recalling all bikes.

How are buyers doing now?

So what to do if you have bought one of the Ikea bikes in the past two years? First of all, Ikea strongly advises against further use of the bicycle, citing the risk of injury. The Ikea bike can be returned to any Ikea store without proof of purchase for a full refund. The same applies to accessories specially designed for the Sladda, such as baskets or trailers (hitches).
