Cycling: Today it worked! After finishing second yesterday, Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) was allowed to raise his hands at the finish today. The German sprinter was unbeatable in the mass arrival with the highest final speed. Meanwhile, Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) takes over the yellow jersey.
Ackermann with the highest top speed
What went just off the mark yesterday with third place worked today. Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) was able to celebrate the biggest win of his career at the finish. After triumphing at the Tour de Romandie a few weeks ago, the German was able to top it again today. For comparison: Ackermann didn't win a single race last season. In general, the sprinter seems to have only now really arrived in the first league of cycling - and how!
After 181 kilometers from Montbrison to Belleville en Beaujolais, Pascal Ackermann, coming from far behind, was clearly the strongest sprinter in the field. With a bit of luck, he could use the gaps that opened up in the final meters and sprint confidently to victory. Pole Michal Kwiatkowski (Sky) was a little less lucky. The leader fell - within the three kilometer mark - and lost the yellow jersey as South Africa's Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) gained bonus seconds again in third place. Second on the day was Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) from Norway.
Pascal Ackerman:
"It's amazing that I was able to win the stage today."
