cycling: Tour de Suisse #8: Démare celebrates in Bellinzona – Dege and Greipel in the top 10

June 16, 2018 by Michael Faiss

Cycling: Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) won the eighth stage of this year's Tour de Suisse. At the end of the circuit in Bellinzona, the Frenchman was able to take advantage of the last chance for the sprinters this year and crossed the finish line just ahead of Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors). Third was Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates), for John Degenkolb (Trek Segafredo) and André Greipel (Lotto Soudal) it was enough for places in the top 10.

Last chance for the sprinters at this year's Tour de Suisse and Arnaud Démare has reason to celebrate: After a little more than 130km on the rather unspectacular circuit around Bellinzona, it was the man from Groupama-FDJ who was the first to cross the line. One man's joy, the other man's sorrow - for Fernando Gaviria it was only enough for second place again today. Alexander Kristoff also completed the podium with a slightly larger gap.

From a German perspective, the good news is that both John Degenkolb (6th place) and André Greipel (9th place) made it into the top 10. Nevertheless, both are still not in top form.

As expected, there were no shifts in the overall standings. Richie Porte (BMC), like the other favorites, took it easy today and defended his narrow lead of 17 seconds over Nairo Quintana (Movistar). So the decision about overall victory will be made tomorrow in the final time trial, which will again take place in Bellinzona.
