cycling: Tour of Poland #6: Austria's Georg Preidler annoys the favorites

August 9, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Georg Preidler Poland

Cycling: cleverly done, hard driven! Georg Preidler (Groupama-FDJ) won the sixth stage of the Tour of Poland and thus clinched his first victory in the WorldTour. The Austrian seized the opportunity when the favorites looked at each other with 500 meters to go. The German Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-hansgrohe) also presented himself very well in second place.

12 mountain classifications

Always up and down - that's the motto of today's stage of the Tour of Poland. On the 129-kilometer section between Zakopane and Bukovina Terma, no fewer than twelve climbs had to be mastered. A circuit with a mountain classification of the 1st / 2nd / 3rd category had to be mastered four times. At the end of the final climb to Bukovina, there were no points for this - but the prospect of winning the stage. Because after that it only went downhill for a short time. It was logical that the contenders for the mountain jersey had to be in the leading group today. So it was not surprising to see Team CCC Sprandi Polkowice in front again. In the person of Lukasz Owsian the Poles tried to keep their backs free for the currently leading Jan Tratnik. With him in the breakaway group were eight other drivers, including Austrian Patrick Konrad (Bora-hansgrohe) with teammate Cesare Benedetti.

9 outliers

  • Patrick Konrad (Bora-hansgrohe)
  • Cesare Benedetti (Bora-hansgrohe)
  • Louis Vervaeke (Sunweb)
  • Jhonatan Restrepo (Katusha Alpecin)
  • Carlos Verona (Mitchelton Scott)
  • Rui Costa (UAE Team Emirates)
  • Lars Boom (LottoNL-Jumbo)
  • Dayer Quintana (Movistar)
  • Valerio Agnoli (Bahran Merida)
  • Nans Peters (AG2R La Mondiale)

Georg Preidler Tour of Poland 6th stage profile

Georg Preidler just attacks - and wins

Lukasz Owsian knew how to fulfill his internal team task perfectly. The Pole secured one mountain classification after the other and even took off his teammate Jan Tratnik's mountain jersey. But he had just as little chance of winning the stage as his companions. The peloton caught the escapees back in time. Late attacks by Dries Devenyns (Quick-Step Floors) and Sam Oomen (Sunweb) were thwarted on the final climb. Attacked just before the crest George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo) several times, but was caught again on the descent by Sky in the person of Sergio Henao and Michal Kwiatkowski. The pace dropped 500 meters from the finish after an attack by Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) was stopped immediately. His team-mate took advantage of this short period of rest George Preidler. The Austrian pulled through and could not be caught in the very technically demanding last few meters. Emmanuel Buchman (Bora-hansgrohe) sprinted to second place, which allowed him to move up to fourth place in the overall standings.

Coéquipier précieux toute l'année, @PREIDI so you said it was an opportunity and it was impressive on the 6th stage of the Tour de Pologne! # TDP2018 pic.twitter.com/acWucBG23y
