MTB cycling: The Swiss riders triumphed with a double success at the XCO MTB World Cup in Mont Sainte-Anne, Canada. In addition to the newly crowned European champion Jolanda Neff (KROSS Racing Team), Bernese Mathias Flückiger (Thömus/RN Racing Team) should be particularly happy. After third place in the short track on Friday, he crowned the weekend with his first World Cup victory.
Mont Saint-Anne does not seem to be the worst address for Mathias Flückiger. In 2010, the man from Bern became U23 World Champion here, and in 2016 he followed that up with third place in the World Cup. Now the Swiss made his big breakthrough with his first ever World Cup victory. He laid the foundation for this on Friday with third place in the Short Track Race. This allowed the Bernese to start from the front row. Mathias Flückiger rode a tactically excellent race with impressive strengths on the descents. He gained valuable seconds on the last descent too and thus secured first place in front of Italian Gerhard Kerschbaumer (+0.15) and French Titouan Carod (+0.23). Flückiger's compatriot Nino Schurter finished seventh (+2.37). In the women's race, the Swiss rider Jolanda Neff once again fully demonstrated her dominance as a driver and relegated Annika Langvad from Denmark to second place with almost two minutes. In front of her home crowd, Emily Batty (+ 2.06) also made it onto the podium.
