cycling: Bike World Championship: Canyon-SRAM & Quick-Step Floors win the last team gold

September 23, 2018 by Michael Behringer

Cycling World Cup Innsbruck team time trial Canyon-SRAM

Cycling: The first medals of the 2018 World Cycling Championships were awarded in Innsbruck today. The Sunweb team was dethroned in the team time trial for both women and men. Nevertheless, BDR had reason to be happy: After the German team Canyon-SRAM with Trixi Worrack and Lisa Klein won the women's competition, the Quick-Step Floors team with Maximilian Schachmann secured gold in the men's competition.

Maximilian Schachmann celebrates gold with Quick-Step Floors

For the fourth and last time for the time being, the Belgian team Quick Step Floors secured the gold medal in the team time trial. The team led by the German Maximilian Schachmann was 62,8 seconds faster than the defending champions on the 18-kilometre section from Ötztal to Innsbruck Sunweb and 20 seconds faster than the favorites BMC. Once again, Quick-Step Floors can look forward to a significant victory. This season, the self-proclaimed blue and white wolf pack seems hard to beat. Nevertheless, the triumph in the team time trial was more of a surprise. The pros of the BMC team, on the other hand, are likely to be disappointed. As a relatively clear favourite, they will ultimately have to settle for bronze.

[RESULTS to follow]

Trixi Worrack and Lisa Klein win women's gold

Even before the men took to the track, the women had to prove themselves on the 54,4-kilometer course. The German team succeeded somewhat surprisingly Canyon SRAM preferably. Last year, the six women in Innsbruck were the favorites of Boel's Dolmans by almost 22 seconds and the defending champions of Sunweb left behind by almost 29 seconds. Together with Lisa Klein, Tixi Worrack can therefore look forward to the first gold medals for the BDR at the cycling world championships. Trixi Worrack is already used to partying, after all she was at the start of all five title wins.

Trixi Worrack:
“We didn't win a team time trial this year. That's why today was also a surprise for us.”

Wow, @sunweb can't do it and @WMNCycling are crowned world champions after a stunning ride! #InnsbruckTirol2018 pic.twitter.com/Di28jZhAND
