Cycling: Marius Mayrhofer gave the BDR the first medal in an individual competition in Innsbruck. The German finished second in the juniors' road race. The Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who had previously been successful in the individual time trial, can be happy about gold again.
Marius Mayrhofer rewards his impressive performance
There is not much more a pro can try to win a bike race. The German junior team made an impressive impression on the road race in Innsbruck. Although not among the favourites, BDR kept the pace high from the start. Eventually the Germans placed Marius Mayrhofer in the top group. Behind them, the peloton got smaller and smaller because the Italians in particular wanted to bring about a decision. Im bad luck was the top favorite at this point Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian suffered a rear wheel defect and was at times more than a minute behind the peloton. But his colleagues were able to pilot him back to the top, where he joined forces with the leading group.
Remco Evenepoel is also in a different league in road racing
Although Marius Mayrhofer as a member of the top group and Remco Evenepoel had already invested the most energy due to his rear wheel defect, these two of all people were able to break away from the severely decimated main field after the merger. However, the roles were clearly divided: Evenepoel set the pace and Mayrhofer bit his rear wheel. On one of the numerous climbs, the Belgian – who has already won the junior time trial – increased the pace and left Mayrhofer behind. How impressive the performance of "new Eddy Merckx" was, Jean-Claude Leclercq commented on Eurosport, saying: "I've rarely seen a racing driver so dominant." With a deficit of 1:25 minutes, the German, who had just turned 18, was able to save himself from the rushing group of pursuers and win the silver medal. The Italian was just behind Alessandro Fancellu before the Swiss Alexander Balmer grab the bronze medal.
