cycling: Down Under Classic: Caleb Ewan wins gallop in Adelaide

13 January 2019 by Michael Behringer

Tour de France 2019 Teams Lotto Soudal Ewan

Cycling: Caleb Ewan (Lotto – Soudal) won his first race for his new team with the Down Under Classic in Adelaide. The Australian crossed the finish line ahead of Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) and Alexander Edmondson (Mitchelton – Scott) on the one-hour circuit. A fall shortly before the end was one of the decisive factors.

Easy curling up at the Down Under Classic

The WorldTour 2019 starts on Tuesday with the Tour Down Under. However, the Down Under Classic was already held today – traditionally two days earlier. In Adelaide, the professionals were allowed to do their laps around Rymill Park. A race duration or race distance of one hour and one lap was set. Before the grand finale of the Down Under Classic, four sprint events were held. These secured themselves Neil van der Ploeg (UNISA-Australia), William Clarke (Trek - Segafredo), Jarlinson Swamp (Trek – Segafredo) and Manuel Boaro (Astana). New escape groups formed again and again for almost the entire race. However, no composition was left really far away.

Caleb Ewan wins his first race for Lotto - Soudal

The decisive gap in the Down Under Classic was only to arise when there was a crash on the final lap. Since this happened in about tenth position, only a small group sprinted for victory afterwards. birthday boy Daniel Oss (Bora – hansgrohe) tried to use a small gap as a soloist, but the German Roger Kluge (Lotto – Soudal) brought the Italian back. In his usual crouched position, his new captain then shot, Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) past everyone. The Australian had no trouble clinching his first success in his first race for the red-white team. Behind him secured himself Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) Second place Alexander Edmondson (Mitchelton-Scott). The regular start of the Tour Down Under continues in Adelaide on Tuesday. On Sunday it will end on the legendary Willunga Hill.
