Cycling: The fifth stage of the Tour Down Under goes to Jasper Philipsen (UAE Team Emirates). The young Belgian actually came second, but the jury reset the winner Caleb Ewan (Lotto – Soudal) after viewing the television pictures. In the last kilometer there was an argument between the two pros on the rear wheel of Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe). The flat stage was certainly not boring beforehand. First, overall leader Patrick Bevin (CCC) and last year's winner Daryl Impey (Mitchelton - Scott) dueled for seconds in the intermediate rankings. Then Patrick Bevin fell and there was a risk of losing time through no fault of his own. But the New Zealander was able to defend his ocher jersey.
Jason Lea extends his lead in the mountains classification
Tomorrow the Tour Down Under up to Willunga Hill is about deciding the overall standings. But today in Australia it was the turn of the sprinters again. The distance from Glenelg to Strathalbyn was 149,5 kilometres. However, anyone who expected that nothing would happen today in terms of the ocher jersey was already wrong in the first half of the race. Although could himself Jason Leah (UNISA - Australia) secured the only mountain classification of the day as a breakaway, but then the Mitchelton - Scott team made sure to catch up quickly.
Daryl Impey wins the first sprint classification
Seven seconds separated the New Zealander Patrick Bevin (CCC) at the beginning of the stage from the South African Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott). The current overall leader and the winner from the previous year saw this narrow gap as an opportunity to duel for the ocher jersey today. Before the first sprint of the day, the Mitchelton - Scott team made sure that the escapees were caught again - and captain Daryl Impey was able to score the maximum possible three bonus seconds. Patrick Bevin secured two seconds with second place.

Patrick Bevin retaliates with the second sprint classification
Since the second sprint classification was not far away, the pace was kept up for the coming kilometers. A successful breakaway attempt was out of the question at this point. Instead, viewers got the duel again Daryl Impey against Patrick Bevin to see. This time the New Zealander was able to take his revenge and collect the three seconds himself. Daryl Impey crossed the line second behind him. Thus, the gap between the two remained at seven seconds. Much more important for tomorrow's stage, however, could be the fact that they are five seconds behind Richie porte (Trek – Segafredo) could drive out. Eventually, the top favorite for the overall win won the last four finishes at Willunga Hill.

Ocher jersey down: Even a fall doesn't stop Patrick Bevin
After the sprint classifications, calm returned to the peloton. So could in person Matthieu Ladagnous (Groupama – FDJ) and Ayden Toovey (UNISA – Australia) drop off two drivers. The Frenchman and the Australian opened up a lead of over three minutes, but the strong wind made life increasingly difficult for them. They had no eyes for the beautiful landscape along the sea anyway. They were caught up again long before the finish line. Some of the wind squadrons from the Sky, Jumbo – Visma and Bora – hansgrohe teams were also responsible for this. However, well-known professionals could not be distanced. Only a fall nine kilometers before the finish caused a dramatic situation, because it caught the overall leader, among others Patrick Bevin. With preparations already underway for the bunch sprint, the New Zealander struggled to catch up, despite the support of his teammates. However, thanks to the team vehicles, he managed not to lose any time today.

Caleb Ewan celebrates too early – jury names Jasper Philipsen winner
In the last few kilometers, the Deceuninck – Quick-Step team knew how to determine the race. captain Elia Viviani was positioned perfectly. But despite the fantastic preliminary work by compatriot Fabio Sabatini the Italian failed to win the stage. Even before he started his run, shot Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) past him. In his usual stoop, Caleb Ewan didn't let anyone drive by. Previously, it came between him and the second Jasper Phillipsen (UAE Team Emirates) but to a rear wheel altercation of Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe). The judges ruled this a violation of the rules, so Caleb Ewan was demoted and Jasper Philipsen was declared the winner. Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain – Merida) was seventh as the best German. The otherwise dominant team Deceuninck – Quick-Step should be very disappointed. In the end, Elia Viviani only finished sixth. The decision will be made tomorrow at the Tour Down Under. Patrick Bevin leads in the general standings with a lead of seven seconds Daryl Impey. Richie porte and Co. are 26 seconds behind. Old masters also have good cards with a deficit of 16 seconds Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana).
