cycling: Vuelta a San Juan #6: German Tivani strikes again as a breakaway

February 3rd 2019 by Michael Behringer

San Juan Tivani

Cycling: German Tivani (Agrupacion Virgen De Fatima) annoyed the sprinters with two compatriots in San Juan. The Argentine won the sixth stage, repeating his breakaway coup from three years ago.

German Tivani ahead of Daniel Diaz – just like in 2016

With a flat profile, the outliers rarely succeed. At the Vuelta a San Juan, however, it should be so far on the sixth stage with start and finish in the Autódromo El Villicúm over 153,5 kilometers. With the three Argentines German Tivani (Agrupacion Virgen De Fatima), Daniel Zamora (Agrupacion Virgen De Fatima) and Daniel Diaz (Municipalidad de Pocito), as well as the Colombian Dayer Quintana (Neri Sottoli – Selle Italia – KTM), a quartet was able to gain a lead of more than four minutes. Thanks to the strong tailwind, the peloton struggled to get the gap under control. Dayer Quintana was not able to benefit from this, because Nairo Quintana's brother suffered a defect eight kilometers from the finish and was unable to fight for the day's victory. Finally, German Tivani secured this ahead of Daniel Diaz - as he did on a stage at the Vuelta a San Juan 2016.

Winner Anacona loses 6 seconds to Julian Alaphilippe

After becoming 23-year-old German Tivani was able to celebrate the day's victory, the main field finished twelve seconds behind him. Won there Sam Bennett (Bora – hansgrohe) the sprint for fourth place ahead of the two-time stage winner Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) and Maximilian Richeze (Deceuninck - Quick Step). The overall leader suffered a tear in the peloton Winner Anacona (Movistar) increased his lead by six seconds Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick Step). Before tomorrow's final stage, however, he is still well on the way to winning the Tour with a lead of 35 seconds. A mass sprint is expected at the circuit in San Juan.
