Cycling: Michael Matthews (Sunweb) has won the sixth stage of the Tour of Catalonia. The Australian defeated the German Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain – Merida) by just a few centimeters in the sprint.
No chance for the escapees
The penultimate stage of the Tour of Catalonia on Saturday was almost entirely up and down. Only the last 20 kilometers or so were really flat. Since on the 174,1 kilometer route from Valls to Vila-Seca only two mountains of the third category had to be climbed in the middle of the race, the section was too easy for real climbers. This is how the runaways saw – like yesterday when Maximilian Schachmann won (Bora – hansgrohe) – her chance came today too. But this time it should not work with the victory of a breakaway. Even as Davide formolo (Bora – hansgrohe) attacked about three kilometers from the finish and became the leader Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) followed him, the sprinter teams reacted impeccably. So it came to the expected mass sprint, the Michael Matthews (Astana) just a few centimeters ahead Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain – Merida) won. There were no changes in the top ten in the overall standings.
