cycling: Race premiere at Cape Epic: The new Bulls Wild Edge Team 2020

March 16, 2019 by Michael Faiss

Product news: The six Bulls team riders will be at the start of the Cape Epic 2019, which starts tomorrow, with prototypes of the new Bulls Wild Edge Team 2020 race fullys. We have initial information about the new bike.

Surprise for Team BULLS shortly before the start of the Cape Epic 2019 - All six Bulls athletes will be on prototypes of the new Bills Wild Edge Team Racefully planned for 2020 at the start tomorrow in South Africa. Only a short time before the start of the race did it become clear that the first ready-to-drive prototypes would be ready in time for the prologue. Actually, the race bikes had already been built and broken in based on the current 2019 frame, but then it became clear: The brand new frame will arrive in time!

[testimonial cite=“Daniel Plath, Product Developer Bulls”]We've adapted the geometry of the Wild Edge to the current course profiles. Race courses like the Cape Epic used to be more marathon-oriented, but now they're at cross-country level. Accordingly, we've followed the trend and adapted the geometry to the new requirements.[/testimonial]

Longer, flatter, more potent: The new Wild Edge 2020

The new Bulls Wild Edge 2020 follows a similar path as the recently presented new Black Adder Team Hardtail for 2019. In view of the increasing XC orientation in the World Cup and also in stage races such as the Cape Epic, the conception and development are concentrated more on smooth running, on a powerful chassis and a safe driving experience in difficult terrain - without neglecting the propulsion on the other hand. A difficult balancing act, which seems to have been successful with the new Bulls XC Race Fully if you want to believe the veteran Karl Platt: "Brutal that thing! Better than I would have imagined. The bike suits my riding style perfectly. We have taken the experience from the development of the new Black Adder frame and adapted it to the fully. With the short chainstays I have more feeling for the rear wheel and thanks to the longer reach I can use a shorter stem and therefore have a more direct steering response.”

But what has actually happened? Above all, the geometry has changed significantly compared to the predecessor: while the chain stays have become 10mm shorter, the main frame has grown significantly in length and the steering angle is also noticeably flatter at 68°. This keeps the front calm even on steep descents and allows the use of shorter stems, which further improve control. However, thanks to the new short struts, the bike does not lose any of its agility and remains easy to control, for example, in hairpin bends. High anti-squat values guarantee a lot of propulsion, even with an open damper.

Visually with a similar silhouette, a lot has changed compared to its predecessor.
High anti-squat values at the rear promise powerful propulsion.
The chainstay has become 10mm shorter in order not to lose agility despite the long main frame.
Look quick! Clean cockpit and sporty saddle elevation.

Gears are shifted in South Africa with Shimano's new XTR 12-speed group.
The Fox Factory suspension is designed to take the fear out of dusty trails.
[testimonial cite=“Martin Frey, Team BULLS“]The seating position and chassis are very well tuned. The suspension responds evenly, yet there's no bouncing during acceleration. This makes for significant progress.[/testimonial]

The race bike, which has to endure the hardships of the Cape Epic, is of course equipped with the best that the market has to offer: from the Fox Factory chassis to the new Shimano XTR 12-speed group, things are big and not messy. By the way: Karl Platt starts in South Africa with a 36 tooth blade, Simon Stiebjahn even with 38 teeth! By the way: A retractable seat post can also be installed in the new Bulls Wild Edge 2020, appropriate to the difficult conditions of modern XC and marathon routes.
