cycling: Tour of the Alps #5: Sivakov & Sky also parry the last attacks

26 April 2019 by Michael Behringer

Cycling: Pavel Sivakov (Sky) won the Tour of the Alps. The Russian and his team fended off all attacks on the last day of the tour. However, the stage win went to the escapees. Fausto Masnada (Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec) - who was even dangerous in the overall standings for a short time - won the two-man sprint against Carlos Julian Quintero (Manzana Postobon).

Fausto Masnada consoles himself with the stage win

The Tour of the Alps 2019 is coming Pavel Shivakov (Sky). But on the last stage things got really tight for the Russian. The fifth section led over 147,8 kilometers from Caldaro to Bozen. In the pouring rain, the escapees were able to assert themselves today. However, it was not just about winning the stage, because with Fausto Masnada (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec) was a dangerous man in the overall standings. Ultimately, however, the Italian missed the surprise coup. Together with Carlos Julian Quintero (Manzana Postobon) he broke away from his comrades-in-arms. As a duo, they lost a lot of time to the group of favorites in the last kilometers. In the two-man sprint in Bozen, Fausto Masnada finally proved to be stronger.

Sky is unstoppable even in the pouring rain

The fight for the overall victory broke out between the favorites around 40 kilometers before the finish in the 9,5-kilometer climb to Jenesien with an average gradient of 8,5 percent. Team Sky kept the pace especially in the person of Chris Froome consistently high - with the knowledge that the gap to breakaway Fausto Masnada had to be reduced. Only just before the summit ventured Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain – Merida) out of cover. At first only Leader could do the Italian Pavel Shivakov consequences. On the descent, however, other professionals caught up. Despite multiple attempts, it succeeded "Shark of Messina" not to distance Sivakov. So he could safely defend his leader jersey. Became the loser of the day Rafal Mayka (Bora – hansgrohe). The Pole lost his third place overall. The Swiss can claim fifth place in the daily standings and ninth place overall Roland Thalman (Vorarlberg – Santic) are happy.
