Cycling: Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) has won the third stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Colombian was actually second but benefited from being relegated to Elia Viviani (Deceuninck – Quick-Step). The Italian champion was penalized after a wave. The Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) continues to lead in the overall standings.
Hatsuyama has absolutely no chance on his own
After a mass sprint at the Giro d'Italia yesterday, a decision in the sprint was also expected today. The 220,0 kilometer stage from Vinci to Orbetello had hardly any difficult obstacles. Only the Poggio l'Apparita - a mountain in the fourth category - had to be crossed 37,7 kilometers before the finish. By this point, the brave breakaway of the day was no longer ahead. Shō Hatsuyama (Nippo - Vini Fantini - Faizanè) fought his way over 120,0 kilometers as a soloist on the streets of Italy. The Japanese already had a lead of up to seven minutes, but of course he couldn't hold his own against the sprinter teams.
Démare is interested in the points classification
The sprinters themselves seemed to be taking it easy until the very end today. Only Arnaud Demare (Groupama – FDJ) was interested in the sprint rankings in Poggibonsi and Grosseto. He secured points for the Maglia Ciclamino and time bonuses with second and first place. However, there were only counters for the points classification for the first intermediate classification. Was the French aware of this fact? In any case, it already seems to be clear that hardly any other sprinter is trying to win the points jersey. Presumably all sprinters plan their exit early. Even with the only climb of the day, we could only see one driver with ambitions. Julius Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo) secured three points at Poggio l'Apparita. The Italian is thus expanding his lead. However, especially in the second half of the Tour of Italy, it is to be expected that Giulio Ciccone will still have one or the other competitor for the mountain jersey.
Gaviria is victorious after relegating Viviani
Five kilometers before the finish, the peloton fell. This led to a split so some riders had to come from behind today, including Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) and Richard Carapaz (Movistar). Team Groupama – FDJ took charge and kept the pace for Arnaud Demare high. But the Frenchman should not be able to convert his team's work into a win. Elia Viviani (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) secured – initially – the day's victory after falling out of the slipstream of Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe) sprinted out and Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) just couldn't be overtaken. But then there were discussions because Elia Viviani made a violent swerve to the left shortly before the finish line and thus Matteo Moschetti (Trek – Segafredo) forced to dodge and slow down. Eventually, the Italian champions were relegated after protests - and Fernando Gaviria was declared the winner. Pascal Ackermann can now look forward to third place.
