Cycling: Daryl Impey (Mitchelton – Scott) can look forward to his first individual stage win in a Tour de France. The South African champions won the ninth stage on France's national day.
15 escapees fight for the day's victory
The ninth stage of the Tour de France was held today on the French national holiday. The course led the drivers over 170,5 kilometers from Saint-Étienne to Brioude, the home town of Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale). With Romain Sicard (Total – Direct Energy) and Anthony Delaplace (Arkéa – Samsic) but there were only two Frenchmen in the leading group of the day. Lukas Postlberger (Bora – hansgrohe) from Austria and Tony Martin (Jumbo – Visma) from Germany nourished the hopes of the German-speaking fans. It was immediately clear that the stage win would be awarded to the 15 escapees. The peloton let the group go and a lead of over ten minutes was quickly built up. At this point, the Deceuninck – Quick-Step team stepped in to claim the yellow jersey from Julian Alaphilippe to defend safely.

Impey & Benoot in a duel for the day's victory
Lukas Postlberger (Bora – hansgrohe) was the first outlier to seriously break away from his companions. The Austrian already had a lead of almost a minute and speculated that his pursuers would disagree. Unfortunately, they didn't do him the favor. So he was then asked again and passed through to the back. Up to the Côte de Saint-Just - the last mountain classification of the day - proved to be Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) and Tiesj Benoot (Lotto – Soudal) as the strongest fugitives. Together they kept their former companions at a distance and were able to decide the day's victory in Brioude among themselves.
Bardet shows himself to his fans
In the two-man sprint, Daryl Impey showed all his cleverness. Initially in an unfavorable position, the South African champions let their Belgian rivals pass them, then snagged their slipstream and easily sprinted to victory. Nothing else happened in the main draw. Ledigich Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) tried to show his fans up to the Côte de Saint-Just. George Bennett (Jumbo – Visma) and Richie Porte (Trek – Segafredo) rode with him, forcing Team Ineos to neutralize the situation.
