cycling: Clasica San Sebastian: Remco Evenepoel has arrived in the WorldTour

August 3, 2019 by Michael Behringer

Quick-Step team presentation Evenepoel

Cycling: Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) has won the Clasica San Sebastian. The only 19-year-old child prodigy from Belgium was able to prevail over his compatriot and Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet (CCC) and thus caused a big surprise. The Swiss Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) finished third. Austria's Patrick Konrad (Bora - hansgrohe) was sixth.

Evenepol San Sebastian

Evenepoel achieves the first victory in the WorldTour

The 39th edition of Clásica San Sebastián could be one we'll be talking about for years to come. The reason: Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) won it. The 19-year-old Belgian attacked with around 20,0 kilometers to go and broke away together with Toms Skujins (Trek – Segafredo). As a duo, they extended their lead to over 40 seconds. On the climb to Murgil Tontorra, attacks rained down from riders such as Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Patrick Konrad (Bora – hansgrohe). With 9,0 kilometers to go, Evenepoel dropped his companion and rode confidently to his first WorldTour victory. Particularly impressive: Evenepoel had already been dropped, then rejoined the peloton, distributed water bottles to his teammates, and then launched his own attack.

Großschartner breaks away – Alaphilippe gives up

The Spanish one-day race was initially dominated by a nine-man breakaway, which, however, had no chance due to the chasing efforts in the peloton. Among them was Austrian Felix Großschartner (Bora-hansgrohe). Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) didn't feel fit enough. The French Tour de France hero and defending champion of Clásica San Sebastián seemed to still be too tired after the Tour de France. Team Movistar must be particularly disappointed, having invested a great deal of effort throughout the day only to be unrewarded in the end.
