Cycling: Sam Bennett (Bora – hansgrohe) won the 14th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Irish champion triumphed in front of the Argentine champion Maximiliano Richeze (Deceuninck – Quick-Step). A massive crash just before the finish overshadowed the stage.
Mass fall and victory by Sam Bennett
188,0 kilometers had to be completed today on the 14th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The professionals were on their way from San Vicente de la Barquera to Oviedo. Due to the simple profile, a mass sprint was expected. The only climb of the day - the Alto la Madera - was already crossed 22,6 kilometers before the finish and had an average gradient of only 8,0 percent over a length of 3,5 kilometers. The escape group was found in time. But just before the finish, there was a mass crash. Among others, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was involved. Due to the 3-kilometer rule, however, all classification drivers were credited with the same time. In the sprint, however, only a few professionals were still able to fight for the day's victory. As expected, favorite Sam Bennett (Bora – hansgrohe) prevailed over Maximiliano Richeze (Deceuninck – Quick-Step).
