Cycling: Bauke Mollema (Trek – Segafredo) has won a monument for the first time in his career. The 32-year-old Dutchman left the well-known competition as a soloist at the right moment in disagreement. Behind them, the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) sprinted in front of the Colombian Egan Bernal (Ineos) in second place. Emanuel Buchmann (Bora – hansgrohe) finished eighth as the best German.
Buchmann goes on the offensive
The 113th Tour of Lombardy was the last monument of the season today. On the 243-kilometer course from Bergamo to Como, an eight-man breakaway initially determined what happened. In the person of Bob jungels (Deceuninck – Quick Step) and Giovanni Carboni (Bardiani - CSF), the last remaining fugitives were caught before the decisive phase. In the Sormano wall and the subsequent descent, the peloton was severely decimated by the high speed. Even before the climb to Civiglio, I attacked Tim Wellens (Lotto – Soudal) one of the favourites. The German was able to break away together with the Belgian Emmanuel Buchman (Bora – hansgrohe). Due to this dangerous escape attempt, the main field was reduced to around 20 men. At the latest as Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) attacked and flew past the leading duo, the final of the Tour of Lombardy was opened.
Mollema benefits from the disagreement
Da Alejandro Valverde when one of the favorites started the race, the competitors naturally didn't let him go. Immediately after its collection it tried Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo). Due to the disagreement of the competition, the Dutchman was able to increase his lead meter by meter. When he was almost a minute ahead of his pursuers, he left Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) on the offensive. But the rest of the remaining peloton didn't admit defeat either. In the final ascent I pushed once more Alejandro Valverde the tempo. His rear wheel got stuck Egan Bernal (Ineos) Michael Woods (EF Education First) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana). But even after the merger, no agreement was reached, so that Build Mollema could no longer be caught up. Alejandro Valverde sprinted forward Egan Bernal in second place.
