Bosch display conversion made easy: Do you want a new control unit on your e-bike?

12 October 2019 by the editorial office

E-Performance: There can be many reasons to change the display or the control unit on your e-bike. Starting with the classic defect, for optical reasons, to upgrading to a newer model with more functions. We'll show you how to do it and what to look out for when converting.

The initial situation is a Bulls trekking bike with a Bosch Active Line Plus drive and the associated Bosch Intuvia display. Completely wired, we want to change the display unit with as little effort as possible.
The new display unit to be installed is called Bosch Nyon. Not only is the size different, the Nyon system also has significantly more functions.

Dismantling of the old system

First we remove the existing Bosch Intuvia display via the plug-in mechanism. Simply unlock the clip and pull upwards away.
But the screw connections on the underside also have to be loosened. When working upside down, be careful when removing the screws - they can easily be lost.
The underside is now freely accessible and the connection unit to the display can be detached. Since the Bosch Nyon system has its own remote control unit, this step is necessary. Here, too, caution and tact are required. The small screws quickly disappear under the workbench. All four screws of the connection must be loosened.

After the control unit has been detached from the display bracket, it can also be removed from the handlebars. To do this, simply loosen and remove the screw connections on the underside.
Left new, right old. The difference between the two operating units can be seen at first glance. An additional joystick is fitted for operation of the Bosch Nyon system.

Assembly of the new system

The new control unit can now be reinstalled. But before that it is important to check the red rubber seal. This should be in the right place and also be free of dirt so that no moisture can penetrate later.

The “new” can be reassembled in the same way as the “old” operating unit was dismantled. With a steady hand and a precision engineering tool, simply screw the connection back on.

The entire display bracket can then be reinstalled on the handlebars. It is important to ensure that the bracket is not overtightened. This is the only way it can still rotate in the event of a fall and the display is protected.

The same applies to the control unit. Not too tight so that it can still rotate in the event of a fall.

The battery of the Nyon display should be charged in advance using the USB cable. If this has not been done, it may take some time before the display is charged via the e-bike battery and can therefore be operated.

Set up the Nyon system

The basic settings are made intuitively and using the joystick on the display or the control unit.

The way the joystick is operated is also well explained.
Use the Nyon system online to be able to use all functions to the full extent together with the Bosch app. Offline, the Nyon system is self-sufficient.
Registration with Bosch is required to activate all functions (including offline functions).

Personalize the Bosch Nyon system

The Nyon system is also a kind of "fitness on-board computer". Therefore it is also necessary to store your personal data. For example, a bicycle training program can be individually adapted.

Usage and Features

The standard dashboard provides all important information at a glance.
The training dashboard puts the performance and the current training effect in the foreground

As soon as the device is registered, map material for navigation can be installed on your own PC.
If the Nyon Display is connected to the PC, all information can be read out.
Regular software updates are recommended. This keeps the device as error-free as possible and the data is up-to-date. This also gives Bosch the opportunity to provide new functions.

The available map material is very extensive. It also has everything without any problems on the almost 6GB internal memory of the Bosch Nyon.
