Azencross: Alvarado & van der Poel win in van Aert's comeback

27 December 2019 by Michael Behringer

Van der Poel

Cyclecross: After yesterday's victory in Heusden-Zolder, Mathieu van der Poel also won the Azencross. In the women's category, Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado can celebrate her victory. Wout van Aert can also be happy. The Belgian raced to fifth place on his comeback.

Van der Poel defeats Iserbyt

After a little more than an hour's driving time Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon – Circus) cheering across the finish line at the Azencross. Before that, the Dutchman said goodbye to all his companions - despite a fall and several wheel changes. Could keep up almost to the end only Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels sauzen - bingoal). The Belgian finished nine seconds behind Mathieu van der Poel. The Dutchman was third Corne van Kessel (Telenet Fidea Lions) in front of the Belgian Tim Merlier (Corendon-Circus). Fifth was Comebacker wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma), who was able to take part in a race for the first time after his fall in the time trial of the Tour de France.

Alvarado now leads in all classifications

A fitting reaction after yesterday's race in Heusden-Zolder succeeded with the women Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Corendon-Circus). The Dominican-born Dutchwoman won by a margin of 1:44 minutes Sanne Cant (Telenet Fidea Lions) and 1:47 minutes ahead Anne Marie Worst (777). She benefited from a mass crash that happened right after the start and put numerous competitors behind. Even so, it would have been difficult for everyone involved to defeat the eventual winner. Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado broke away from her companions in the first lap and continuously increased her lead. Thanks to the big gap, she now leads the DVV Trofee in addition to the Superprestige and World Cup rankings.

Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado:
“That was maybe my best cross of the season. I didn't see the race coming like that either. I just wanted to give it my all.”
