Cycling: Jasper Stuyven (Trek – Segafredo) has won the first semi-classic of the 2020 season. The Belgian triumphed after 200 kilometers in front of his compatriot Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) and the Dane Sören Kragh Andersen (Sunweb).
Stuyven celebrates his greatest victory
The cycling-mad Belgian fans can celebrate the first victory right at the start of the classic season. After 200,0 kilometers from Gent to Ninove Jasper stuyven (Trek – Segafredo) in front of his compatriot Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) prevail. The two have in common with Soren Kragh Andersen (Sunweb) and Matteo Trentin (CCC) were able to break away from the peloton at the Kapelmuur - and were only seen again at the finish. Attempts by the top favorites to catch up with the fugitives in the last few kilometers failed.
Jasper Stuyven:
“We drove carefully from the front all day. This is how we saved energy. This is my greatest victory. In the sprint I first let Lampaert come and then closed the door a little. I think that was okay.”
Küng is strong ninth
In general, the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad kept what it promised. The race was aggressively driven from the start, causing many drivers to have problems early on. The main field was thus further and further thinned out. Numerous attacks also ensured that the racing rhythm was not even. Among other things, the long-injured went wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) on the offensive. In the end it shouldn't be enough for him for the top ten. The Belgian was therefore not satisfied. But the Swiss Stefan Kung (Groupama – FDJ) should be satisfied with his performance. After a cautious and clever driving style, he finished ninth.
Wout van Aert:
"I felt good. We were always in a good position with the team until Mike couldn't keep up at the front. It was too late for me then. We drove a good race but the result is disappointing.”
